Mahama promises to set up district mining office in all mining areas

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former president John Dramani Mahama, has promised to create a district mining office in all mining areas in the country.

In those district mining offices, he said, there will be officers from the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) who will receive applications for mining licenses.

These officers will also supervise the small-scale mining practices to ensure that they conform to the best practices, he added.

Mr Mahama said these while speaking to small-scale miners in Nsutem of the Fanteawkwa South Constituency in the Eastern Region to conclude his Building Ghana Tour of the Region on Thursday, February 1.

He said “Every district will have a district mining office and in the district mining office, we will have a Minerals Commission officer and an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officer.

“If you want to apply for a mining license you apply to your district office, when you are mining they will come and supervise and make sure you are doing the right thing.

Aside from that, we will employ the graduates from the University of Mines and Technology at Tarkwa, everybody who has a small-scale concession and you are mining we will attach those young mining engineers to you so that they will teach you how to go about mining in safety so that people don’t die on your mining site and you are able to mine properly without misadventure.”

GAPNEWS Ghana moves to capture US$2.4bn China soya market. The hefty tariff on soybeans from the United States has caused a 17 percent import decrease of the produce into China in February 2019, being the lowest level recorded since 2015, General Administration of Customs – Chinese statistical agency, has revealed. In 2017, U.S. soybean exports to China reached a volume of US$14.573 billion. Currently, the United States is the world’s largest soybean producer and second largest exporter, after Brazil. On the other hand, China is the world’s largest importer of soybeans – imported 91 million tonnes in 2018 market year as against 94 million tones the previous year. This suggests that the trade war between the two largest economies has created the opportunity for more than US$2.4 billion market share of soybeans that countries producing it can compete. Although, imports of soybean to China has reduced by 17 percent, this does not mean that consumption has reduced in similar terms...
Implications of Microfinance for Efficient Finance Systems in Ghana. BY ATTA GEORGE PEPRAH Most Microfinance (MFIs) in Ghana are deposit-taking institutions. However, deposit-taking is not without risk. MFIs must be able to lend profitably enough to pay for and protect the deposits they mobilize. They must also be able to cope with temporary downturns when these arise. Failure to do so can quickly harm financial stability and deprive small depositors of their deposits. For this reason, Ghana has subjected their banking sectors including the MFIs to prudential regulation. There are several players in the microfinance sub-sector. Rural and Community Banks (RCBs) constitute the largest players in the rural formal banking sector. RCBs are unit banks owned by community members and stand out as the largest financial players in terms of geographical coverage According to ARB Apex Bank (2013) as at 2013 there were 143 RCBs with 546 branches across the country with more than 1.2 mill...
